نَديمُboon companion عَينيْof my eye بعدكَafter you الكَوْكَبُthe star
ولَوْعَةٌand burning anguish إِنْسَانُهاits pupil يلهبُblazes
My eye's boon companion after you is the star,
And anguish—its pupil is aflame.
ودَمْعَةٌand a tear فيupon الخَدِّthe cheek مَسْفوحَةٌshed
كأنّهاas though it مِنْfrom جَمْرَةٍan ember تُحْلَبُis milked
And a tear shed upon the cheek,
As though it were milked from an ember.
ماnot امْتَنَعَwas withheld الدَّمْعُthe tears وإِسْبالُهُand their shedding
عَلَيَّfrom me لَمّاwhen امْتَنَعَwas withheld المَطْلَبُwhat is sought
Tears and their shedding were not withheld
From me when what I sought was withheld.
إِنْif تَكُنِbe الأيّامُthe days قَدْalready أَذْنَبَتْsinned
فِيكَagainst you فإنَّthen indeed الدّمْعَthe tears لاdo not يُذْنِبُsin
If the days have sinned
Against you, then tears commit no sin.
