Come, pour it for me, my companion and dear friend—

wine! Can I live without wine?

Give us relief: let us drink this golden wine at dawn,

with cool water, hard to obtain and fine.

It has the color of pure gold and the taste of cloves,

and the fragrance of musk and the blaze of a wick.

I have made a cup the cure for sorrow; and sometimes

it has made what was not beautiful seem beautiful to me.

A dark-red wine—we sought her hand from the master of her cask,

as night's bright stars had already signaled their setting.

He unveiled her for us in his cup, as though

he had bared the broad face of a bright, burnished, double-edged sword.

She has gone on devouring days, state after state,

and following one generation in time with another.

Whenever cares rise into view within us,

they call to one another to leave the young man's breast.
