لَوْif أَطَقْتُI had been able to bear العَزَاءَsolace ماnot قَلَّwaned صَبْريmy patience
لَوْ أَطَقْتُ العَزَاءَ ما قَلَّ صَبْري
وقَبيحٌand ugly فيin الحبِّlove حُسْنُgracefulness of العَزَاءِresignation in grief
وقَبيحٌ في الحبِّ حُسْنُ العَزَاءِ
Had I been able to take solace, my patience would not have waned;
If I had endured consolation, my patience would not have diminished,
And in love, graceful resignation is ugly.
And in love, being consoled is ugly.
