    فَباكِرِ الكَأْسَ لِيْ بِلاَ نَظِرَهْ

    Our mistress, boy, has come early;

so bring me the cup early, without delay.

She has gone out for revelry and wantonness, although

the maiden is bashful and demure.

Love of her—may I never lose her—brings burning pangs,

folded within my breast and spreading.

I have tasted nothing of her but her lips

and clasping those drooping branches of hair.

And she scolded me, so I died of fright.

Ah, how beautiful she is when pleased, and when she scolds!

Then the surge of wine's lingering stupor turned us back

    amid those dense braids.

And many a night loomed with its breast

over me, swathed like a head-shawl.

I tore its pitch-darkness open toward a moon

whose robes were veiled by chastity.

Turn wine's tears toward me, from

    ten, twenty, and twelve years.

People have spoken of their rising—

a recollection that has become strange to my mind.

My knowledge of right is a knowledge

    resplendent—if you recognize the unfamiliar.

Ah, how astonishing are my vile father and

his roaming in threadbare sleeveless tunics!

He bears a head: pickaxes rebound from

its surface, and rugged boulders too.

Were the dark-bay mules to climb a slope

on it, they would stretch out numbed legs.

Nor are catapults of any use against it:

a thousand soaring, and a thousand plunging down.

Look at where the shears go upon the

    head—that knobbly slab.

Had you taken to it hammers from

Harran, wrought by an expert hand,

then their finest men's palms would come away

    wearied, and the tool shattered.

How many raptures you have spoiled, and how much

of life's clear sweetness you have left clouded!

And how many—when they see you, O angel of

    death—are their cold-numb fingertips!

And how many curses they have against you, and how many

hideous, notorious slanders against a mother,

a noble woman your baseness made light of

    and stained with wanton vices.

Stop at his dwelling; you will see a marvel

    of ignorance, rivaling Basra's curiosities.

O every doom, and every rising sign

of ill omen, and O every grievous hour!

Glory to Him who holds the sky above the

earth, with your filthy ways upon it!
