They heard blessings upon the Prophet recited in succession;
They heard the prayer upon the Prophet continuously
So they split into factions and said, “No, no!”
So they dispersed into sects and said no more
ثُمَّthen اسْتَمَرَّcontinued علىwith الصَّلاةِthe invocation of blessings إِمامُهمtheir imam
فَتَخَرَّبُواso they ran riot وَرَمَىand pelted الرِّجالُthe men رِجالاmen
Then their imam continued invoking blessings;
Then their imam kept on with the prayer
So they ran riot, and men pelted men.
So they were confused and men threw at men

O people of Homs, expect from its disgrace
O people of Homs expect from its shame
Humiliation to befall you, and calamity.
Humiliation that will befall you and affliction

Foul be your faces—faces that have so often
Your faces have long been insolent faces
Had their noses rubbed in dust and fared ill.
Though its sneezes defiled and its state was vile
إِنْif يُثْنَis deterred مَنْone who صَلّىinvoked blessings عليهِupon him كَرامَةًas an honor
فاللّهُthen God قَدْindeed صَلّىbestowed blessings عليهِupon him تَعالَىexalted is He
If one who has invoked blessings upon him to honor him is deterred,
If one prays on him as an honor
Then God—exalted is He—has indeed bestowed blessings upon him.
Then Allah has prayed on him, the Exalted
