وتذكّرت إذ نحنالفتيان

Umamah was distressed that I walked leaning on a staff,

And remembered when we were young men.

فلقبلُ ما رام الأله بكيدهِ

فلقبلُ ما رام الأله بكيدهِ

إرَماً وهذا الحيّ من عدوان

إرَماً وهذا الحيّ من عدوان

For long before, God had assailed with His stratagem

Iram and this clan of Adwan.

بعد الحكومة والفضيلة والنهى

بعد الحكومة والفضيلة والنهى

طاف الزمان عليهم بأوانٍ

طاف الزمان عليهم بأوانٍ

After authority, distinction, and wisdom,

Time passed over them in due season.

وتفرّقوا وتقطّعت أشلاؤهُم

وتفرّقوا وتقطّعت أشلاؤهُم

وتبدّدوا فرَقاً بكلّ مكان

وتبدّدوا فرَقاً بكلّ مكان

They scattered, and their limbs were torn apart,

And they dispersed in bands in every place.

جدَبَ البلاد واعقمت أرحامهُم

جدَبَ البلاد واعقمت أرحامهُم

والدهر غيّرهم مع الحدثان

والدهر غيّرهم مع الحدثان

The lands grew barren, and their wombs became sterile,

And time changed them amid calamities,

حتى أبادهمُ على أحزاهمُ

حتى أبادهمُ على أحزاهمُ

صرعى بكلّ نقيرةٍ ومَكانِ

صرعى بكلّ نقيرةٍ ومَكانِ

Until it annihilated them upon their [unclear word in the supplied text],

Lying slain in every hollow and place.

لا تعجبنّ أمامُ من حدَثٍ عرا

فالدهر غيرنا مع الأزمان

Do not marvel, Umamah, at a calamity that has struck;

For time has changed us through the ages.
