توَالَىcame in succession عليّupon me الغدرُtreachery منكمfrom you وأخْلقتْand grew threadbare
توَالَى عليّ الغدرُ منكم وأخْلقتْ
حَبائلُthe cords وديmy affection وانقضىand ended منكمon your account وَجْدِيmy longing
حَبائلُ ودي وانقضى منكم وَجْدِي
Your treachery befell me time and again, and threadbare grew
Betrayal upon betrayal from you has ensued, and my affectionate ties are severed,
the cords of my affection; my longing for you came to an end.
My fervor for you is no more, and has come to an end,
وقدand indeed كنتُI used to أُغِضيI close جفنَthe eyelid عِينيof my eye علىover القَذَىthe grit
وقد كنتُ أُغِضي جفنَ عِيني على القَذَى
حِفاظاout of loyalty وأُخفِيand I conceal منكمُfrom you بعضَsome ماof what أُبديI reveal
حِفاظا وأُخفِي منكمُ بعضَ ما أُبدي
And I used to close my eyelid over the grit,
I used to turn a blind eye to your faults,
out of loyalty, and conceal from you some of what I revealed,
And conceal some of what I felt, as precaution,
إلىuntil أنْthat أفادتْنيtaught me التجاربُexperiences والنُّهىand reason
إلى أنْ أفادتْني التجاربُ والنُّهى
سبيلَthe path التسلِّىto solace فاستمرّso it persisted بهاalong it قَصْديmy resolve
سبيلَ التسلِّى فاستمرّ بها قَصْدي
until experience and reason taught me
Until experience and advice guided me,
the path to solace, so my resolve held fast to it.
To seek solace, so I persisted in that pursuit,
ليَهْنِmay it rejoice فؤاديmy heart أنهthat it قدindeed سَلاكمُhas ceased yearning for you
ليَهْنِ فؤادي أنه قد سَلاكمُ
وآمَنand is safe منfrom خوفfear القَطيعةِof estrangement والصَّدَّand rejection
وآمَن من خوف القَطيعةِ والصَّدَّ
May my heart rejoice that it has ceased to yearn for you
To console my heart that you are avoided,
and is safe from fear of estrangement and rejection.
And be relieved from the fear of estrangement and rejection.
