    What have I to do with the deaf calamities that strike me,

    until I seem a target for their terrors?

    They give what does not suit me; but if they take

    from me, it is something for which I have no replacement.

    أَخدْعةٌ أم جنونٌ ذاك أَم صَلَف

    I blame them, though they lend no ear to reproach;

    is that deception, madness, or arrogance?

    يا ليت شِعْري ألؤمٌ منه أم خَرَف

    I see Time hostile to every man of learning;

    would that I knew: is it baseness on its part, or senility?

    إنْ كنتَ طالبَ دنيا فالغِنى الشَّرف

    Spare me learning and the literary arts altogether;

    if you seek worldly gain, then wealth is honor.

    I see souls befriend every wealthy man

    by nature; they turn toward whatever he wishes.

    أَوْلا فحَظُّك منه الهمُّ والأَسف

    Do not keep company with learning unless wealth accompanies it;

    otherwise, your share of it is worry and sorrow.

    A young man's life beneath poverty's humiliation is a station

    where no one with self-respect will settle.

    With my resolve, I shall surely ride into every deadly peril:

    either wealth that satisfies the soul, or death.

    Whoever does not depart will not stand out; so rise, and you will find a way.

    The pearl has no worth while the shell holds it.
