نَ(completes 'the praisers') وأنتwhile you مُخترعinventor الغَرائبْthe wonders
What can the praisers say,
What do the praisers say
when you are the inventor of wonders?
While you are the inventor of wonders
أعْجزتَyou rendered powerless كلَّevery فضيلةٍexcellence
حتىuntil تَعجَّبتِwere astonished العَجائبthe wonders
You have left every excellence powerless,
You have defeated every virtue
until wonders themselves were astonished.
Until wonders were astonished
ووهبتَand you gave أهلَthe people of الأرضِthe earth حَuntil (continued)
تى(completes 'until') لمdid not تجدْyou find فيin الخلقِcreation طالبone asking
And you gave to the people of the earth,
And you have given the people of earth gifts
until you found no one in creation still asking.
That you could not find any seeker in creation
وفَضَحتَand you put to shame فضلَthe excellence of السابِقيthe predecessors (continued)
ن(completes 'the predecessors') فصارso it became مَدْحهمُpraise of them مَثالبgrounds for reproach
And you put your predecessors' excellence to shame,
And you have exposed the superiority of the predecessors
so praise of them turned into reproaches.
So praising them became blemishes
فُقْتَyou surpassed الكواكبَthe stars ضِعْفtwice ماthe measure by which
فاقتsurpassed علىabove الأرضِthe earth الكواكبthe stars
You surpassed the stars by twice the measure
You have eclipsed the stars twice over
by which the stars surpass the earth.
What the stars exceeded on earth
فنِهايةso the summit of العَلْياءِglory أنْlowest (continued)
زلُ(completes 'lowest') ماthat which علوتَyou rose to منَof المَراتبthe ranks
So the summit of glory is
So the utmost highs
the lowest of the ranks to which you have risen.
Are what you have risen above in ranks
وإذاand when أَشرتَyou gesture بعَزْمةٍwith firm resolve
ضاقتْgrow narrow علىfor الدهرِTime المذَاهبthe paths
And when you gesture with resolve,
And if you decide with determination
the paths grow narrow for Time.
The courses of time become straitened
وإذاand when دَنوتَyou draw near منto الوَغَىthe fray
فالموتُthen death أَجْزعُmost terrified منthose whom تُحاربyou fight
And when you draw near to the fray,
And if you approach turmoil
Death is the most terrified of those you fight.
Death is more timid than your adversary
وإذاand when الملوكُthe kings تَفاخرَتْvie in boasting
برفيعof the lofty أَقْدارِdegrees of prestige of المَناصبthe stations
And when kings vie in boasting
And if kings boast
of their stations' lofty prestige,
Of the loftiness of glorious positions
فلِعَبْدِthen for the slave of عبدِكَyour slave فيهمُamong them
فَخْرُthe pride of الأسودِthe lions علىover الثعالبthe foxes
then your slave's slave has, among them,
To your servant's servant among them
the pride of lions over foxes.
Is the pride of lions over foxes
