أَوْهَتْ قُوَى جَلَد المُحبِّ الوامقِ
The camel-drivers’ songs accompanying you, and the driver’s urging,
The melody of love for you and the driver's shout
have sapped the ardent lover’s strength to endure.
Have weakened the endurance of an ardent lover

Parting from you came upon me too soon, and I attained no
Parting hastens upon me, yet I gained no union with you
union but a glance, like a lightning flash.
Except a glance, like a flash of lightning

And by your father, love has left of me nothing but
By your refusal, nothing of passion remains in me
a hand pressing upon a throbbing heart.
Except a hand clasping a throbbing heart

Be gentle with your eyes’ captives, for seldom
Gently, with my prisoner, your ringlets, for rarely
does a lover’s patience endure estrangement.
Does the patience of a lover endure separation

Lo, I have concealed my love for you, yet it is
a fire blazing upon a yearning heart.
A fire kindling in a desirous heart

Grant that I could control a silent tongue—
My will has empowered my silent tongue
what recourse have I against an eye’s speaking tears?
I have no stratagem against a speaking tear

If they merely dripped, I would plead an ailment;
If it flowed, I would have no excuse
what recourse have I against tears pouring in torrents?
I have no stratagem against one who sets at eve

If I do not dare love's billows and seek
in quest of union on every shaggy, handsome mount,
The union with every disheveled, running lover

And charge between the two battle lines, exposing
myself there to a spearman or an archer,
Myself there to the thrust of a lancer or an archer

And defend against death's troops with my shoulders
in every perilous strait of tangled paths,
On every confusing, winding road

My feet denied comfort and I lost
and may I lose the sword-sling’s marks on my shoulder;
The tracks of purpose round my neck

And I fled from my adversary and from the company of those
my character, and my petitioner or night visitor be disappointed.
Whose manners disappointed me or knocked at my door

You departed; the homecoming of any traveler has not gladdened
You left, and my soul rejoiced not at the howdah of one arriving
my soul, nor has it grieved at the loss of anyone departing.
Nor grieved at the loss of one departing

Parting from you has left me between an abiding grief
I am, due to your loss, between lasting sorrow
that never departs, and a patience that has fled.
That will not cease, and fleeting patience

Oh, have you kept, at the pass of Rama,
O destiny! Have you kept safe in the valley of the acacias
my pledge, which you affirmed, and my covenants?
My covenant which I emphasized and bound?

Where the zephyrs and the breeze both
alike—a charm to the listener or the one who breathed them in;
Entice the hearing or perception of one who sniffs

The lips of apple blossoms and the cheeks of anemones

And the dripping down green myrtle trees is reckoned
tears of coyness on an adolescent’s cheek.
The tears of the guide on the cheek of a young lover

Would that I knew! Will what is past repeat
or have the days severed my ties to it?
Or have the days detached from it my bonds?

Suppose it returns—how can I remove what
Grant that it return! How can I, when what
the turns of time have written upon the partings of my hair?
The turns of fate have written above my destiny?

A script whose letters have turned pure white—why, then, does it
A line tomorrow will dry up the ink, so it has
turn black when the ardent lover’s heart sees it?
No power when a hopeful one beholds it

Why does Time single me out for its reversals,
Why does time single me out for its turns
till they raced toward me with a racer’s speed?
Until it raced to me with the race of a rival?

It keeps serving me bitter brine to drink, over and over,
It continues to pour upon me sorrows repeatedly
while giving others further draughts of clear, sweet water.
And exalts others with limpid, delicious water

The sandgrouse go forth among the gardens, safe
The wildcats stroll safely among the gardens
from them, and we toy with the high-soaring sparrowhawk.
While we play with the tame lynx

Be patient with it, for many a foe’s condition
Patience over it, for the status of one spurned
has changed, and he has become a friend indeed.
Often changes and becomes that of a loyal friend
