لاnot تُشْبِهُresembles الحَمّامُthe bathhouse فيin وَضْعِهاits design
إلاexcept حُمَيّاintoxicating heat الخمرِwine فيin طَبْعِهاits nature
The bathhouse, in its design, resembles nothing
The dove in her posture is naught
but wine’s intoxicating heat in its nature.
Save wine in its working when quaffed.
ففيهماfor in both of them منفعةٌbenefit جَزْلةٌabundant
وإثْمُهاand its sin أكبرُgreater منthan نَفْعهاits benefit
For in both there is abundant benefit,
In both there is profit full great,
yet its sin is greater than its benefit.
Though the sin therein is greater than its weight.
فتلكfor that one هَتْكُviolation العقلِthe mind فيin شُرْبِهاdrinking it
وتلكand that one هتكُexposure الجسمِthe body فيin نَزْعِهاundressing for it
For the one ravages the mind when drunk,
For wine folly brings in its train
and the other exposes the body when one undresses.
When filled to excess is the cup or the brain.
فإنّfor indeed فيin إدمانِهاcontinual indulgence in it للفتىfor the young man
مَضَرّةٌharm يَعْجَزhe is incapable عنof دفعِهاwarding it off
For continual indulgence in it brings a young man
And in plunging oft to its depths
harm he is powerless to ward off.
Is peril from which no device e’er protects.
فوالِso maintain عنfrom كلتيهماboth of them توبةًrepentance
ينقطعُwill desist الشيطانُSatan عنfrom قَطْعِهاbreaking it
So persist in repentance from them both,
Then turn from them both and repent,
and Satan will desist from breaking it.
So Satan no more may mislead or prevent.
