جاءhas come الربيعُspring أخوbrother of حياةِthe life of الأَنْفُسsouls
ومُجمِّلُand adorner of الدنياthe world بأَفْخَرِin the most splendid مَلْبَسِgarb
Spring has come, brother to the life of souls,
Springtime came, the brother of refreshed souls,
and adorner of the world in the most splendid garb.
Beautifying the world in most splendid attire.
فاغْنَمْso seize بناwith us مُلَحthe delights of الزمانِtime مُبادِراhastening
وتَملَّand take your fill منهاof them حَظَّthe share of منone who لمwas not يُبْخَسshortchanged
So seize with us the delights of time, making haste,
So let us enjoy the season's salt, with haste,
and take your fill of them—the share of one not shortchanged.
And attain from it a share unstinted.
واستقبِلِand welcome الأَرجthe fragrance المُعطَّرperfumed كلماwhenever
مَرَّتpassed عليهover it الريحُthe wind كالمُتنفِّسlike one breathing
And welcome the perfumed fragrance whenever
And welcome the meadows, fragrant each time
the wind passes over it, like one breathing.
The breeze blows over them like a breath.
فكأنماso as though زهرُthe blossoms of النباتِthe plants قَلائدٌnecklaces
نُثرِتwere scattered علىover صَفحاتthe surfaces of بُسْطcarpets of السُّندسfine silk
So it is as though the plants' blossoms were necklaces,
The blossoms of plants are like garlands
scattered over the surfaces of fine-silk carpets.
Strewn on the expanse of velvet.
والوردُand the rose يَخْجلblushes حينَwhen قبَّلkissed خَدَّهits cheek
ثغرُthe mouth of الأَقاحيthe daisies منfrom عيونthe eyes of النرجسthe narcissi
And the rose blushes when its cheek is kissed
The roses blush when the mouths of buds
by the daisies' lips, before the eyes of narcissi.
Kiss their cheeks from narcissus eyes.
فكأنهso it seems غيرانُjealous أدهشهbewildered it الهوىlove
وأمالَand bent منهfrom it الفكرُthought جِيدَthe neck of منكِّسone hanging his head
So it seems jealous, bewildered by love,
As if passionate love astonished them
and thought has bent its neck, like one hanging his head.
And turned their thoughts to bowed heads.
وكأنماand as though الأغصانthe boughs تَطْربrejoice كلماwhenever
ألقتْimparted إليهاto them الريحُthe wind سرَّthe secret of مُوسوِسa whisperer
And it is as though the boughs rejoice whenever
As if the branches grow cheerful whenever
the wind confides to them a whisperer's secret.
The wind whispers a secret to them.
وكأنand as though هَتْفthe cooing of الوُرْقِthe gray doves فيin أَغصانِهاtheir boughs
لفظٌspeech يُفيدكinforms you منfrom فصيحٍone eloquent أَخْرسmute
And it is as though the gray doves' cooing in their boughs
And as if the rustling of leaves on their branches
were speech that informs you, from one eloquent yet mute.
Were words from an eloquent mute.
والماءُand the water قدhas عَبثتْtoyed بهwith it أيديthe hands of الصَّباthe east wind
فَحكيso it mimicked غُضوناwrinkles فيon جبينِthe brow of مُعبِّسone frowning
And the hands of the east wind have toyed with the water,
The water, the hands of morning have toyed with,
so it mimics wrinkles on a frowning brow.
Relating something to a frowning forehead.
وكأنماand as though حُبُكthe ripples of الرياحِthe winds علىupon النَّقاthe sand dune
أَثرthe trace of الحَزازِscurf علىon سَنامِthe hump of الأَعْيُسthe tawny-white camel
And it is as though the winds' ripples upon the sand dune
As if the winding of the winds on the soft sand
were traces of scurf on a tawny-white camel's hump.
Were traces of scratches on the neck of a young goat.
والطيرُand the birds تَسْرَحroam freely فيin الرياضthe meadows غَوادِياsetting out in the morning
للرزقِfor sustenance بينamong مُبكِّرٍone setting out early ومُغلِّسand one out in dawn's darkness
And the birds roam the meadows, setting out in the morning,
The birds freely wander the gardens
for sustenance—some early, some in dawn's darkness.
Seeking sustenance, early and late.
والوحشُand the wild beasts بينamong سَوانحٍthose crossing left to right وبَوارحٍand those crossing right to left
ورَواتعٍand those grazing بينamong الرياضthe meadows وكنَّسand those sheltering in lairs
And the wild beasts—some crossing left to right, some right to left,
The wild creatures between cliffs and raptors,
some grazing among the meadows, others sheltering in their lairs—
And sandgrouse between gardens and churches.
تَرِدcome to drink at الغديرَthe pool ورودَthe coming of منone who لاdoes not يشتفِىquench his thirst
وتنالand take منfrom طَرفيْهits two banks ماwhat لمdid not تَغْرِسplant
come to the pool like one whose thirst is unquenched,
They visit the pond, unquenched,
and take from its two banks what they did not plant.
And attain from its edges what they never planted.
والشمسُand the sun تُجْلَىis unveiled فيin مَطالعthe rising places of شَرْقهاits eastern rising
فيin حُلَّتينtwo robes مُعَصْفَرٍsafflower-dyed ومُوَرَّسand dyed yellow with wars
And the sun is unveiled at the horizons of its eastern rising,
The sun adorns its eastern horizons
in two robes: one safflower-dyed, one dyed yellow with wars.
In two robes, saffron and crimson.
