قدindeed كنتَyou used to تَعْبدُworship منof لهوٍamusement ومنand of طَرَبِdelight
قد كنتَ تَعْبدُ من لهوٍ ومن طَرَبِ
Rejoice! For this Eid crescent has returned with what
Rejoice, for this is the crescent moon of Eid, returning with
You used to worship—amusement and delight.
That which you were worshipping of vanity and excitement

يلوح في الأفُق الغربي في شَفق

كالنون خُطَّتْ على لوحٍ من الذهب
It gleams on the western horizon in the twilight glow,
It gleams on the western horizon at dusk
Like the letter nūn inscribed on a tablet of gold;
Like a nun inscribed on a golden tablet

Or like fresh growth at a nail’s base, when
Or like the renewed origin of triumph when it appears
Its henna is seen fading from a henna-stained hand;
The pawing of his stead from the hand of one who grasps the reins

Or a ring of silver, most of which has melted,
Or its ring of silver, most of which melted
When the one who cast it onto the flame grew heedless.
When its caster neglected it over the flame
