فقَصِّريso curtail منof أملٍhope خائبِfutile
O soul, your life is not everlasting;
O soul, what is this transient life you live
So curb your futile hopes.
So limit your hopes that are bound to deceive
وَيْكِwoe to you أَماdoes ... not? يكفيكsuffice you أنto تُبِصريsee

Woe to you! Is it not enough to see
Alas, is it not enough that you witness
Funeral biers borne in regular succession,
Funerals pass by, day after day without reprieve

Bearing the child, the adult, and one beginning
Of a child, a youth, an elder with grey hair
His youth, and the middle-aged and the gray-haired—
A father, a son, a brother or friend so dear
منof والدٍa father أوor ولدa child أوor أخٍa brother
أوor منof غريبٍa stranger عنكِto you أوor صاحِبa companion
Whether a father, a child, or a brother,
Is there any excuse left that you can give
Or a stranger to you, or a companion?
Except the false hope that makes the fool adhere
فهلso, has ...? تَبَقَّىremained لكfor you منany حُجّةٍexcuse

So is any excuse left to you
How strange that knowing this, man continues
Except the deception of false hope?
To hoard in greed like a callous profiteer
أمَاis it not? عجيبٌstrange أنّthat ذاthis كلَّهall of it

Is it not strange that all this
If there was nothing beyond death, abstinence
Remains undiminished in the acquirer's greed?
From this world would be an obligation severe

If there were nothing but death,
Without death, the worries of this life
Renouncing this world would be a duty.
Would eliminate all inclination and desire

Or, if there were no death, the sorrows
Yet man will stand to account before his Creator
Of time would dispel the longing of one who longs.
Warnings resound, but we turn a deaf ear

How much more so, when man, after death,
Is closely questioned by One who knows and reckons?

Admonition has given warning, yet our ears
Are off to one side, apart from all that is mentioned.
