أأَحْبابَناO our beloved ones هلis there ليfor me إلىto ماwhat عَهِدتُمyou knew
منof العيشlife فيكمamong you مثلَlike ماwhat كنتُI was مَطْمَعُa hope
O our beloved ones, have I any hope of returning to what you knew
My friends, can I still find the life I knew,
Of life among you, as I once lived,
The life I hoped for while living with you?
وأُبصرand I see ذاكthat الثغرport يُشرقshines نورُهits light
وتبدوand appear القُصورthe palaces البيضwhite منهfrom it وتلمعand gleam
And seeing that port, whose light shines,
Can I see that smile that shines like the sun,
And whose white palaces come into view and gleam?
And those white palaces glittering, every one?
وهلْand is there ليfor me إلىto الرملِthe sands المُنَدَّىdew-moistened نباتُهits vegetation
فأختالُso I strut فيamid تلكthat الرياشِfinery وأَرْتَعand I revel
And may I return to the sands, their plants moist with dew,
Can I walk again through the swaying green,
So I may strut amid that finery and revel?
And wander those meadows, grazing and serene?
أباO father of حسنٍHasan إنْif فَرَّقhas parted الدهرُtime بينَناbetween us
فمِنْfor it is in طبعِهits nature تَفْريقُparting ماwhat كانit used to يجمعbring together
O Abu Hasan, if time has parted us,
Abu Hassan, though time has parted us now,
For it is in its nature to part what it once brought together.
That’s just time’s way, it breaks apart every vow.
ولكننيand yet I أَطوِىfold الضلوعthe ribs علىaround الأسىgrief
ويغَلْبنىand it overpowers me فيضُa flood الدموعof tears فيَدْفَعso it surges forth
And yet I fold my ribs around grief,
But still I swallow my grief and its sting,
And a flood of tears overpowers me and surges forth.
As tears pour down more than my cheeks can hold.
وقدand indeed كنتُI was لاnot أَرضىcontent سوىwith anything but الوصلunion دائماًalways
فهاso here أناI أَرْضَىam content بالخيالwith the phantom وأَقْنَعand I am satisfied
And once I was never content with anything but union;
Always before, only union could please,
So here I am, content with the phantom, asking no more.
Now I find peace in mere memory and ease.
