ياO بدرَfull moon تِمٍّat fullness بالجمالِin beauty تَبَرْقَعاveiled itself
وقضيبَand a bough بانٍof a bān tree ماسَswayed لماwhen أنْthat سَعَىwalked
O full moon that veiled itself in beauty,
O full moon that shines with beauty, radiant and bright,
And bān bough that swayed as it walked!
And slender bow that shoots arrows when drawn taut and tight,
ماليwhat is the matter with me دعوتُكI called you للوصالِto union فلمyet did not تُجِبْyou answer
ودعوتَنيand you called me لهواكto love you لَبَّيْتُI answered الدُّعاthe call
Why is it that I called you to union, yet you did not answer,
I called you to union but you did not respond,
And when you called me to love you, I answered the call?
You called me to your love and readily I went.
أتُراكhave you, I wonder حُلْتَturned away عنfrom المودةِaffection أمor تُرَىcould it be
داعٍsomeone praying عليناagainst us بالقَطيعِةfor estrangement قدindeed دَعاprayed
Have you turned from affection, I wonder, or could it be
Do you now shy from affection? Or does it seem,
That someone has prayed for estrangement to befall us?
A caller to estrangement has summoned in between?
ياO مُسقْنِيone making me drink غُصَصَchoking sorrows الغرامِof love بصَدِّهthrough his rejection
لماwhen تأهبhe made ready للمسيرto depart وَودَّعاand bade farewell
O one who makes me drink love's choking sorrows through his rejection,
O you who gave me love’s wine, pure and refined,
When he made ready to depart and bade farewell!
When you prepared to leave, bade me goodbye.
ورميتنيand you shot me بسهامِwith arrows لحظِكof your glance قاصِداdeliberately
لوif كانhad been قلبيmy heart عارفاًaware لتَدرَّعاit would have donned armor
And you deliberately shot me with the arrows of your glance.
You shot me with glances like well-aimed arrows,
Had my heart been aware, it would have donned armor.
Had my heart been knowing, it would have armored before.
لكنهbut it غِرٌّis naive فَغرَّso deceived بهit الهوىpassion
والقلبُand the heart مُغْرًىenthralled بالصَّبابةby ardent longing مولعاenamored
But it is naive, so passion deceived it;
But it’s naive, passion made it foolish and blind,
And the heart is enthralled by longing, passionately enamored.
A heart made foolish by youth is inclined.
ولقدand indeed أتيتُكI came to you سائلاًasking فيconcerning حاجةٍa need
حاشاكfar be it from you ياO مولايmy lord أنْto تَتَمنَّعاrefuse
And indeed I came to you, seeking a favor;
I came to you asking for what I desired,
Far be it from you, my lord, to refuse!
Far from you, my Master, to refuse or be miser.
وكتبتُand I wrote سائرall of حاجتيmy request ياO سيديmy master
وَقِّعsign فَديتُكmay I be your ransom واستمدَّand take ink وَوقِّعاand sign
And I wrote out my entire request, my master:
I wrote all my need, my Lord, for you to read,
Sign it—may I be your ransom—dip your pen in ink and sign!
Sign, my ransom, extend your hand and sign the decree.
وسَخاand he gave generously بماwith what قدindeed كانhe used to يُبْخِلُنيbegrudge me بهit
كرماout of generosity وجادand was generous بنفسهwith himself وتبرعاand gave willingly
And he gave generously what he had once begrudged me,
Be generous with what you once withheld from me,
Out of generosity, giving himself freely and willingly.
With bounty and nobility, give of yourself, freely.
ومليحةِand one lovely in النَّغَماتِmelodies تحسبyou would think عودَهاher lute
طِفْلاan infant وتحسبُهاand you think her عليهover it مُرْضِعاa nursing woman
And a woman of lovely melodies—you would think her lute
The beautiful melodies think their lute is a child,
An infant, and her a nurse suckling it.
And count themselves as its wet nurse, loving and mild.
أبداًalways تَراهُyou see it مُقمَّطاswaddled فيin حِجْرهاher lap
حازit attained المعاليlofty honors قبلbefore أنْthat يَتَرَعْرعاit grew up
Always you see it swaddled in her lap;
You always find it cradled in her embrace,
It attained lofty honors before it had grown up.
Reached heights of glory before it could walk or pace.
ولربماand often ضَربْتهshe struck it ضرباًa blow موجِعاpainful
فسمعتَهso you heard it منfrom ضربهاher blows مُتوجِّعاgroaning in pain
And often she struck it with a painful blow,
Sometimes she would strike it with hurtful blow,
So you heard it groaning in pain from her blows.
Then you would hear from her striking painful woe.
غَنَّتْshe sang فأغنتْso she enriched والغناءُand singing غناؤهاher singing
ثمthen انثنتْshe turned كيماin order to تقولَspeak فتُسْمِعاand make herself heard
She sang and enriched us; hers is singing itself.
She sang and her singing was song personified,
Then she turned to speak and make herself heard.
Then she softly whispered so her voice could guide.
فإذاand when تَغنَّىit sang قلتُI said ماwhat قدalready قالهhe said it
فيin وصفِdescribing مثلِكone like you شاعرٌa poet قدalready نَوَّعاvaried his verse
And when it sang, I repeated what had been said
Whenever it sang, I said what the poet stated,
In describing one like you, by a versatile poet:
In praise of your likeness, his passions created.
نَشَرتْshe let loose ثلاثَthree ذوائبٍtresses منof شعرِهاher hair
فيin ليلةٍa night فأَرتْand she showed لياليَnights أربعاfour
She let loose three tresses of her hair
With the three tresses of her hair she let down,
In a single night, revealing four nights;
In a night she revealed four moons abound.
واستقبلتْand she faced قمرَthe moon السماءِof the sky بوجههاwith her face
فأرتنَيso she showed me القَمرينthe two moons فيat وقتٍone time معاtogether
And turned her face toward the moon in the sky,
With her face she greeted the moon up above,
So she showed me the two moons together at once.
And showed me two moons at one time in my love.
