My torment has continued because of sweet lips.

And my blood was shed unavenged between throats and the sides of necks.

Weeping stirs up from my tear every surging sea,

And sorrow brings forth from my sigh every raging wind.

A passion that grew until it exceeded any describer's reach,

And an excess of sickness beyond any describer's words.

So if my heart sought solace, its way would be barred

By the lingering trace of passion, old and new.

I never traversed sorrow's fire unknowing,

Nor waded into passion's sea unaware.

No tear was made fair to me; it was only that I

Was afflicted, amid my trials, with a wayward heart,

And a dark-eyed beloved whose glance enriches the Babylonians,

And bestows on the boughs the suppleness of his limbs.

A scorpion from his temple guarded the rose of his cheek,

So it stings whoever casts a plucker's glance upon him.

A cheek aids time's vicissitudes against me,

And here I am, held fast between an archer and a pebble-flinger.

I shall follow my resolve wherever it heads, and make for

The faces of death as dangers arise.

May honor deliver me from humiliation, or wealth

From poverty—or may I meet death without regret.

For time's vicissitudes have tasted my wood and shaken it,

And found it bitter, unyielding to anyone who would bend it.
