May time run as I choose,

and bring me near my homeland and my home,

so I may drive longing's assaults away from me

and take revenge on separation's vicissitudes,

and frolic in the fields of youthful play,

casting off my bridle in their playgrounds.

And spring has spread upon the hills

garments embroidered by the dews of rain.

And there the waterwheel's piping note

accords with the sweet melodies of turtledoves.

And its canal overflows, while the wind fashions

coats of mail made of tiny rings.

And the breeze has spread fragrant incense,

sending its scent upward without fire.

And spring has woven for its two banks

    ornamental borders along green margins,

    their emerald studded with pearls,

their jewels interspersed with pure gold.

    Gardens of bounty: their blossoms,

so tightly crowded, resemble glittering stars.

    Skies of leaves, within which

are suns formed of full moons in the fruit.

And earth with pools of pitch within it,

cast, then flowing as rods through the channels.

And how many a sweet mouth that seaport holds,

like honey's taste amid the fragrance of wine!

I grew drunk on it—with passion, separation, and rejection—

so here I am, remembering, with a hangover.

But anxiety over gray hair has filled my heart,

crowded with great cares, with no room for trifles.

How strange that I rejoice in my night,

and grieve over the light of day!

Drops of tears flowed from my eyelids

onto specks of gray in my sideburns.

And these increased as those increased,

until both became seas within seas.

And a woman, having looked at it,

    almost hurried to flee.

“Is that gray hair showing on you?” I said, “No, rather,

it is a garment from the robes of dignity.

And I raced sorrow at full gallop, so it raised

at my hair's parting the dust you saw.”

Then she turned away, fleeing, and said,

“Be damned for your excuse—here is mine:

When gray hair blossoms in a man's sideburns,

    every chaste beauty shuns him.”

May every rain shower water Alexandria,

matching some of my copious tears.

And had I poured out all my tears

and let my prayer loose without abridgment,

Noah's flood would have risen above it,

too vast for shores or a seabed.

But may every thundering, rain-laden cloud

    pour down upon the pillars,

    until its hills become

    perfumed in mantle and veil,

brides unveiled in a garden's nook,

its gillyflowers strewn for them like wedding largesse.

Oh, alas that my life has been lost,

and time has not brought my visit there any nearer.

Yet I hope for it, and have nothing

but a little patience in my captivity.
