زيادةُincrease المالِwealth بابُa gateway الهمُّworry والتعبِand toil
زيادةُ المالِ بابُ الهمُّ والتعبِ
فكلَّماso whenever زدتyou increased مالاwealth زدتyou increased فيin السَّببthe cause
فكلَّما زدت مالا زدت في السَّبب
Increasing wealth is a gateway to worry and toil.
Increasing wealth is the path of worries and toil
So whenever you gain more wealth, you add to their cause.
The more wealth you gain, the more the cause multiplies
فالنفسُfor the soul تزدادgrows فقراpoorer بالغنىthrough wealth أبداًalways
فالنفسُ تزداد فقرا بالغنى أبداً
كمُطْفِىءlike one extinguishing النارِthe fire عندَat الوهْجthe blaze بالحطبwith firewood
كمُطْفِىء النارِ عندَ الوهْج بالحطب
For the soul grows ever poorer through wealth,
The soul grows poorer in riches forever
like one quenching a blazing fire with firewood.
Like extinguishing a fire with wood at its peak
لوif أقنعsatisfied المرءَthe man منof دنياهhis worldly life منزلةٌa station
لو أقنع المرءَ من دنياه منزلةٌ
ينالُهاhe attains it كانhe would be معذوراexcused علىfor الطلبthe pursuit
ينالُها كان معذورا على الطلب
If a man were satisfied with a station in his worldly life
If one were content with the station of life
that he could attain, he would be excused for seeking it.
That one could attain, one would be excused for seeking more
لكنْbut إذاwhen حَصَّلتْattained آمالُهhis hopes أَرَباa goal
لكنْ إذا حَصَّلتْ آمالُه أَرَبا
رَقَىascended بهwith him أملٌa hope ثانٍa second إلىtoward أَربa goal
رَقَى به أملٌ ثانٍ إلى أَرب
But when his hopes attain a goal,
But when one fulfills all of one’s hopes
a second hope carries him upward toward another goal.
Another hope arises, leading to more gain
