إذا شئتَ أن تُقْلى من الناس كلِّهم

إذا شئتَ أن تُقْلى من الناس كلِّهم

وتُهجَرَ هجر الأيَئول إلى صُلْحِ

وتُهجَرَ هجر الأيَئول إلى صُلْحِ

If you wish to be hated by all people,

If you wish to be shunned by all people

and shunned with an estrangement that never leads to reconciliation,

And be abandoned like the lost camels

وتُنظَرَ بالعين التي نَظَروا بها

وتُنظَرَ بالعين التي نَظَروا بها

كبارَ الأفاعي في المَضرَّة والقُبْح

كبارَ الأفاعي في المَضرَّة والقُبْح

and viewed with the eye with which they viewed

And be looked upon with the eyes they looked with

large vipers in their harmfulness and ugliness,

At the elderly snakes, with harm and ugliness

فكنْ سائلاً في المال والجاهِ منهمُ

فكنْ سائلاً في المال والجاهِ منهمُ

ولا سِيَّما إنْ رُمْتَ ذلك بالمَدح

ولا سِيَّما إنْ رُمْتَ ذلك بالمَدح

then ask them for wealth and status,

Then ask them for money and status

especially if you seek that through praise.

Especially if you intend to praise them

فلا تكتسبْ غيرَ القَناعةِ إنها

فلا تكتسبْ غيرَ القَناعةِ إنها

تجارةُ حُرٍّ ليس تخلو من الربح

تجارةُ حُرٍّ ليس تخلو من الربح

So acquire nothing but contentment, for it is

Do not acquire anything but contentment, for it

a free man's trade, never devoid of profit.

Is the trade of a free man, never lacking profit

نصحتُك فأقبلْ أو فسوف تَرى إذا

نصحتُك فأقبلْ أو فسوف تَرى إذا

قَصدتَ خِلافِي ما يفوتُك من نصحي

قَصدتَ خِلافِي ما يفوتُك من نصحي

I have counseled you: heed it—or you will see, if

I have advised you, so accept or you will see

you choose to oppose me, what you miss of my counsel.
