If the outcome of what grieves is patient endurance,
If the consequence of patience in adversity
then hastening it at calamity is more fitting.
Is hastened during calamity, it is more apt,

The end of souls' sorrows is their consolation,
And the ultimate solace for grieving souls
so better for them to hasten it and be rewarded.
Is to expedite it while they are rewarded.

دِراكا ونارُ الحرب تُذْكَى وتُسْعَر
The brave, gallant man is not the one who strikes necks
The brave is not one who strikes his chest
in succession, while war's fire is kindled and inflamed;
As cups of wine are ignited and kindled,
ولكنَّهbut he is منthe one whose يُؤلمُpains الثُّكْلُbereavement قلبَهhis heart

rather, he is the one whose heart bereavement pains,
But one whom bereavement pains his heart,
whom time's misfortunes assail, yet he endures.
And the events of time expose, yet he is patient.

Though the grievous calamity is great in magnitude,
If the great calamity is difficult in its place,
your forbearance is loftier in stature and greater.
Your forbearance is higher in merit and greater.

Part of what your breast contains is an ambition
Your breast contains some determination
beside which the whole world grows narrow and small.
That straitens the entire world, belittling it.

For forbearance, majesty and lofty peaks,
and knowledge and virtues have seas within it.
And for knowledge, virtues and vast oceans.

A calamity has indeed shaken the towering mountains;
Grief has shaken mighty mountains,
it has struck, yet the mountain of your forbearance stands firmer.
But your fortitude is weightiest and firmest.

Your excellence is like the sun in radiance and height—
Your merit is like the sun in its light and sublimity—
far be it! Rather, it is higher, brighter, and farther-reaching.
Nay, it is higher, nobler, and more splendid.

Through your knowledge, the souls of discerning men seek guidance,
With your knowledge, the enlightened souls are guided,
and you know better what those offering condolences have said.
And you are more knowing than those who console.

The prescribed observance of condolence is a prophetic tradition;
Consoling is a Prophetic tradition—
otherwise, prudence emerges and springs from you.
Otherwise, discernment issues from you and flows out.

What has been said is only part of what you know,
What has been said is but some of your knowledge,
so in this, those who say little and those who say much are alike.
So there is deficiency and abundance in it.

Your knowledge of things is such that nothing can be added
Your knowledge of things—no increase over it,
to it; nor do you forget it and then need reminding.
Nor do you forget then remember it anew!

When one's perception is sound, certainty is assured for him,
certainty; and conception is the probe of minds.
And the astrolabe of intellects functions properly.

The world has submitted to ‘Ād and Tubba‘,
and Kisra and Caesar wielded royal power within it.
And Chosroes and Caesar managed kingship in it.

the eye's gaze falls short of them and grows weary.
Eyes squint to gaze at them in amazement!

Have the days kept them? Or has ruin spared

One abased and forgotten or mighty and mentioned?

He would have been most rightful and worthy of triumph.

The hand of death has seized a brain
surrounded by an army of prudence and resolve.
Guarded by the weapons and armies of resolve.

Woe to death! How it has wronged him, yet it is

Among your handiworks, which are feared and cautious.

When a coat of mail protects the people.

While death in that was rendered helpless.

Rather, he remains immortalized in time.

A refuge in whom they live, suffice, and behold!

Enriched until none destitute remains on earth.

When it is said “the Emperor,” no superior remains
of excellence but is inscribed in him.
Whose merit is not recorded as inferior to yours.

Meritorious person is tardy in comprehending.

For this grief affects it and you it influences.

What you have attained from those departed is more glorious.
