Here is the canal—welcome to its season!
This gulf, so welcome is its time
Oh, how lovely the late afternoons amid its gardens!
Oh, how delightful are its shores between its groves

So let your gaze roam as you please; in it you will see
So stroll with your gaze as you wish, you will find in it
a meaning that frees the heart from its sorrows.
A meaning that frees the heart from its sorrows

The east breeze drifts gently along its two banks,
The morning breeze flows gently on its sides
so musk’s fragrance rises from its basil.
And the scent of musk rises from its sweet basil

And it blows over its skin, transforming it
It blows above its banks restoring them
into pearls that dazzle the eye when beheld.
As pearls that delight the eye in their visibility

So the whispering boughs seem like dear companions,
It is as if the whispers of the branches are loved ones
each sharing some of his melodies with his brother.
Each imparting to his brother some of his melodies

The waterwheels sang plaintively and accompanied
The mill wheels of water complied and aided
the birds’ melodic songs among its boughs.
The birds' singing in the branches of their nests

And the sun on the sunset horizon is like one departing,
And the sun on the horizon like traveling caravans
grieving at separation from his native lands.
Yearning for their homelands after separation

This is a sight to which, were it given its due, would hasten
This is a view that if treated justly, for it
Khosrow Anushirvan from his vaulted hall.
Khosrow Anushirvan strove, from his palace
للهto God, in admiration أياميmy days بهthere ومُساعِدِيand my companion
منone whose صَحَّbecame binding عِقْدُthe covenant السحرِof enchantment منfrom أجفانهhis eyelids
God, how fine my days there, and my companion,
My days in it, and my helpers
whose eyelids make enchantment’s covenant binding.
When the spell of magic clears from their eyelids

My roses come from his cheek, and sipping his saliva
From his cheek, my roses, and the sipping of his approval
is my wine, and my sweetmeat is sucking the tip of his tongue.
My wine, and my transport, sucking his tongue

He walks in a mirrih garment that enfolds a figure
Seeking with a gentle breeze that carried
like a slender lance, and his glance is like its spearhead.
A statue, his glance like his teeth
فأروحso I go forth at evening فيin بُرْدِthe mantle الشبابِof youth وأغتدِيand I go forth at dawn

So I go forth at evening in youth’s mantle, and at dawn,
So I wander in the coolness of youth and don fine clothes
with the reins of my affairs in his devil’s hands.
With the reins of my affair in the hands of its devil
