أَما رأيتَ هلالَ العيدِ حين بَدَتْ
للعينto the eye منهof it بَقاياremnants جرمbody دائرِهِof its circle
للعين منه بَقايا جرم دائرِهِ
Have you not seen the Eid crescent, when there appeared
Have you not seen the new moon of Eid when it appeared
to the eye the remnants of its round body,
To the eye remnants of its circular body
كحرفِlike the rim of جامٍa cup منof البَلّورِcrystal قابَلَهmet it
كحرفِ جامٍ من البَلّورِ قابَلَه
ضوءٌlight وأخفَىand concealed الدُّجىdarkness إشراقَradiance سائرِهِthe rest of it
ضوءٌ وأخفَى الدُّجى إشراقَ سائرِهِ
like the rim of a crystal cup struck
Like the letter 'jim' of a crystal cup which
by light, while darkness hid the radiance of the rest,
A light faced and the darkness hid the rest of its radiance
أوor درهمٍa dirham فوقَabove دينارٍa dinar تَجلَّلهcovered it
أو درهمٍ فوقَ دينارٍ تَجلَّله
عُلْواًfrom above وضاقand was too small عنfor استيعابِencompassing آخرهthe rest of it
عُلْواً وضاق عن استيعابِ آخره
or a dirham atop a dinar, covering it
Or a dirham above a dinar adorned with
from above, yet too small to encompass the rest of it?
Loftiness, too narrow to contain the rest of it
