A first strand of gray—I hastened to cut it,

To remove the visible part of its thread as it descended.

It said, “Even if you shorten me out of fear,

The hands of the nights are spinning behind me.

And am I anything but a fire-stick’s spark that has chanced upon

Patches of tinder, and so is kindled and set ablaze?”

So I made peace with it when I became certain that it

And all behind it were an army sent by God.
