أيا سَيِّدي وأخي لا تَغِبْ

أيا سَيِّدي وأخي لا تَغِبْ

فعندي لك اليوم ما يُسْتحَبّ

فعندي لك اليوم ما يُسْتحَبّ

O my master and my brother, do not stay away;

For today I have something delightful for you:

ملوخيَّةٌ سَبَقتْ وقْتَها

ملوخيَّةٌ سَبَقتْ وقْتَها

وجاءت كهيئةِ خُضْر الزَّغَب

وجاءت كهيئةِ خُضْر الزَّغَب

Molokhia that has come before its season,

And arrived looking like green down.

وقد نُقِّيَتْ قبلَ تقطيفها

وقد نُقِّيَتْ قبلَ تقطيفها

بكَفَّىْ لبيبٍ خبيرٍ دَرِب

بكَفَّىْ لبيبٍ خبيرٍ دَرِب

It was cleaned before its leaves were plucked,

By the hands of a discerning, expert, practiced man.

وقد غادرَتْها حدودُ المُدَى

وقد غادرَتْها حدودُ المُدَى

كما غادر الصبرُ قَلْبا مُحِبّ

كما غادر الصبرُ قَلْبا مُحِبّ

And the knives’ edges have left it,

As patience has left a loving heart.

وقد أُحْكِمت بفراخِ الحَمام

وقد أُحْكِمت بفراخِ الحَمام

ودُهْن الدَّجاج وصُفْر الكُبَب

ودُهْن الدَّجاج وصُفْر الكُبَب

And it was perfected with young pigeons,

And chicken fat and yellow balls,

إلى أنْ تَحرَّر تركيبُها

إلى أنْ تَحرَّر تركيبُها

كما حَرَّر الصَّيرَفِىُّ الذَّهَب

كما حَرَّر الصَّيرَفِىُّ الذَّهَب

Until its blend was refined,

As the money changer refines gold.

وكَمَّلَها النضجُ حتى هَدَتْ

وكَمَّلَها النضجُ حتى هَدَتْ

فليس لعيبٍ إليها سبب

فليس لعيبٍ إليها سبب

And cooking perfected it until it grew still;

So no flaw has any way into it.

فبادرْ إلينا فكلٌّ إلى

فبادرْ إلينا فكلٌّ إلى

قدومِك مُلتِفتٌ مُرتِقب

قدومِك مُلتِفتٌ مُرتِقب

So hasten to us, for everyone is

Watching for your arrival, waiting expectantly.

وما قَصْدنا بك إلا الجمال

وما قَصْدنا بك إلا الجمال

لأنك روضةٌ أهلِ الأدب

لأنك روضةٌ أهلِ الأدب

And in you we seek nothing but beauty,

For you are the garden of men of letters.
