I see evil as the nature of human souls,

driving them between fault-finding and blame.

Yet they are restrained by reason,

as a headstrong horse is checked by a tug on the bridle.

Good may sometimes spring from their deeds,

as a keen sword may sometimes fail to cut.

So do not let their outward show deceive you:

beneath the ashes lies the hottest blaze.

    ومن ليس يأخذ أوفَى الذِّمام

    The most useful of them to you is one who does no harm;

and whoever takes nothing has fulfilled his pledge.

If you cannot avoid their company,

keep it scant, with caution and suspicion.

It is only like a sick man's eating,

to satisfy his craving, the most harmful food.

Whenever you reproach someone who has shunned you,

you are more deserving of that blame.

For the root of your meeting what you loathe

from people lies in companionship and closeness.

Live, if you can, with little speech,

    few companions, and few disputes.

it is as good for him as speaking rightly.

Be the bravest of people in forbearance when

anger approaches you with a vast host.

The forbearing man's patience has a fair outcome,

like taking medicine to ward off sickness.

Beware self-conceit: even a noble man

is blamed, when conceited, as the base are blamed.

Just as through humility the lowly rise

and ascend in merit to the highest station.

Your cheerful face will win what

a scowling man cannot win with lavish gifts.

Train your tongue to speak the truth,

even if truth means drinking poison.

Beware a lie that lures you,

even if it promises everlasting life.

If you desire a life of honored self-sufficiency,

and the respect of one who cannot be oppressed,

win contentment, a treasure that protects you

and enriches you without soliciting an envious man.

Do not pursue greed, for it

is the rich man's poverty and the valiant man's humiliation.

    Its demands have no limit

through all time, except the meeting with death.

    وإلا فبالشكر والإهتمام

    Repay kindness with its like;

failing that, with gratitude and attentiveness.

For praise of one who bestows kindness

takes the place of mighty favors.

Whenever you gain power over those who wronged you,

let there be pardon for their wrongs and crimes.

praise and reward by giving worldly goods.

Conceal your secret as a miser conceals

his last water on a morning of raging thirst,

or as a coward guards his soul, having found

a shelter from death amid defeat.

Regard your heart as a grave for it,

and say with your tongue, 'Silence! Silence!'

If an opportunity arises, with no fear

    of its consequences, be resolute.

Help to advance good however you can,

with money, counsel, and protective influence.

Deal tactfully with your contemporaries in matters small

and great, even in the offering of a greeting.

Be a statesman, a commander among kings,

and deal tactfully, for your purpose, with the lowliest person.

The evil of one who is not feared may reach

the utmost in harm and ferocity,

as ants, weak though they are, may kill

the cub of a mighty lion, hard to reach.

    Teach gently whenever you know,

like a shepherd skilled in tending grazing herds.

Be quick to say, 'I do not know,' when questioned,

if you are ignorant, without embarrassment.

    ومن زَلّ بايَنْتَه باعْتِصام

    Whoever gets it right, you share his success;

whoever slips, you stand apart from him, protected.

If they are ignorant and you know, you alone

win distinction after the crowd's jostling.

    وخُذْها ولو من أَقلِّ الطَّغَام

    Do not disdain wisdom that can be learned;

take it even from the lowliest rabble.

A person's worth is measured by what he possesses

of knowledge, not the good looks he has.

    For spears, despite their length,

cannot match short arrows at a distance.

    Do not diminish people's worth:

for belittling is the least of forbidden deeds.

Be appreciative of the excellence they possess,

    without exaggeration or detraction.

Raise the deserving through your reverence,

even a child just short of puberty.

Stop short of claiming what you deserve:

however humble you are, your worth is high.

and freely waive a right bindingly owed to you.

the key to their locked doors is persistence.

to escape the ruinous perils of pursuit.

For a thing will not become right in a man's eyes

merely through his excessive, passionate love for it.

Hold fast to the bonds of truth:

behold, they admit of no breaking.

    ومَثِّلْ مُقامَكما في الرِّجام

    Do not let the world of riches beguile you;

picture the resting place of you both among the grave-stones.

Be in your life like one seeking

provisions from the market for a distant destination.

For wealth and life are only like the passing image

of a phantom visiting by night within a dream.

Take this as the counsel of one whose purpose

is reward through it, not the beauty of the verse itself.

If it proves pure when smelted by discerning minds,

it is an arrow with which a non-archer hit the mark.

If it is found counterfeit, my admission stands

as its intercessor, taking hold of the reins.
