How far things are from what delights,

Indeed—and how near they are to what harms!

For good pays only a rare visit,

And evil returns by night and day.

And sickness lies in what is delicious or sweet,

And benefit in all that is unpleasant and bitter.

At your first sip, a mote comes

To your mouth; you seek to turn it away, but it will not go,

Until, when you try to get it out

By pouring out some water, it turns away and flees,

As though it intended the very thing

It does by choice, for mischief and harm.
