When you were so gracious that your promise to me proved true,
my hopes grew confident of success in my quest.
يَفديكmay he ransom you كلُّevery عريضِbroad الجاهِprestige ليسthere is no لهfor him

May every man of great standing be your ransom, with no
generosity to show but excuses and pretexts.
كأنas though سائَلهhis petitioner فيماin what يُحاولهhe seeks it

It is as though his petitioner, in what he seeks
from him, were questioning landmarks and ruins.

كأنهاas though it were بينamid أَصْفادshackles وأغلالand fetters
His miserly hand has held back from doing good,
as though it were bound in shackles and fetters.
I shall surely thank you شُكْراwith gratitude لاno انقضاءَend لهto it

I shall surely thank you with gratitude that knows no end;
for if I die, my words will thank you for all time.
وماand not يُكافِىrepays علىfor فضلٍa favor تُقَلِّدهُyou confer it

And this cannot repay a favor you bestow,
but it is all I can offer in my poverty and want.
