If your estrangement would leave me alive a while,

I would not lack patience in your absence, or endurance.

But it was not content with the suffering I endure

until it sowed discord between soul and body.

It should suffice you that, were I to seek for my passion

an increase beyond what I suffer, I would find none.

    فيا صبابةُ زِيدي يا غرام قِدِ

    I relish my torment when it brings her joy;

so, O longing, increase; O passion, blaze!

Ah, may God slay her eyes—how many they have slain

deliberately, fearing neither avenger nor retribution.

Her glance is languid with proud disdain; you might think it

drowsy, or only lately afflicted with sore eyes.

    Lithe, her slender-waisted figure sways

like a dewy shoot whose flanks the breeze has bent.

She shows you night above dawn above a bough,

above a dune, rolling onward like the sea's waves.

    هذِي الشَّبيبةُ قد وَلّت ولم تَعُد

    I thought my youth would win her over;

this youth has departed and has not returned.

She did not whiten my locks without knowing

that I count my hair's blackness among my weapons.

    لكنَّه فيضُ ما اسْتَوْدعتِ في كبدي

    Do not think my hair turned gray from age;

it is, rather, the overflow of what you lodged in my liver.

How many a wilderness I crossed for love, afraid,

where a traveler stumbles, trembling with fear of it.

And many a night, dark as a gazelle's eye,

I traversed unguided, before the morning stars were kindled.

As though its stars, shining in the darkness,

were silver coins, and the Pleiades a coin-tester's palm.

Had a fire-kindler tried to see his hand

within it, even al-Zarqa could scarcely have done so.

And in my right hand leaned death's right hand,

in the form of a sword, no less and no more.

Sharp on both edges, its stroke never needs

repeating, even if the blade were brought down on Uhud.

Quenched along its sides but thirsty within, it was tended

by the smith's hand as a mother tends her child.

As though ants had crawled across its flat,

leaving a trace like a crease in skin.

Until I surveyed a camp whose dweller was unassailable,

ringed by forest lions from Banu Asad.

Each a formidable man, with no hand at his wrist

save a keen blade, and no skin save mail.

Jealous, often drawing his sword, making accusations

on suspicion, and trading sleep for wakefulness.

So I came with hidden footfalls: had I trodden with them

upon someone's skin, he would not have felt them, so light were they.

Until I kissed the camp's maiden, and she awoke,

gazing at me with the eyes of a skittish oryx calf.

She greeted me, distraught with fear,

    bewildered, mingling welcome with anger.

I lingered, now kissing her, now making her feel

what love had done to me, as she leaned upon my upper arm.

And I told my heart, when it feared a sudden assault:

This is a watering place hard to replace—so drink.

She bade me farewell, saying through her tears:

I fear you will die if you return.

And I departed, with night's armies already in retreat,

and Time gnawing both its hands in envy.

Resolve is nothing but braving terror; devote yourself to what

you seek, and strive toward it without delay.

How long this slackness in obscurity's abasement? Rise,

and seek the exemplar of greatness, with strength undrained.

    فما حَمى الغابَ إلا جرأةُ الأَسد

    And repel abasement, lest its envoy overtake you;

for only the lion's daring protects the forest.

No soul rises that abasement turns away from striving,

nor an ambition that does not rise day after day.

And draw good fortune from praising al-Sa'id; you will find

a sea that sustains you, never exhausted through all eternity.

The world reeled with joy at him, so he steadied it

with his forbearance; thus the earth did not sway.

Through your bounty, the frontier town's mouth has come to smile,

exulting through justice in its new robes.

A frontier town where the earth's goodness is gathered, just as

you have gathered every rare distinction from every virtue.

I persisted until I saw all mankind

in one man, and all the earth in one town.
