And indeed I marvel at a gray-haired man

Who plucks out his white hairs to conceal his age.

And is that not like trimming wicks,

Which, when they die down, flare up through that trimming,

And like a well that water-drawers drain,

Which at once refills after being emptied?

He hopes thereby to bring youth back,

But what death has taken will never return.

When the foundation fails to support a wall's height,

Then any mending above it is in vain.

And how long can darkness remain

    When dawn attacks it?

If you grieve over something lost,

Then your share of it is sorrow and regret.
