She sent you her phantom as solace,
and the dye of your night was about to fade.

And she came to you late at night, as though the darkness
had bound the stars into a crown for its head.

And when you contemplate the stars, you imagine them
flowers in bloom, or cross-eyed eyes.

She gave us, from her cheek and her saliva,
roses with which she greets us, and wine.

Roses that grow fresher when smelled,
while roses grow more withered when you smell them.

And she revealed to us hailstones whose coolness makes
a chaste worshipper’s soul crave kisses.

Hail that melts others but does not melt; and whenever
the love-stricken drinks from it, his burning thirst increases.

I have not forgotten her, lamenting parting with tears
unaccustomed to a course down her smooth cheek.

If your tears subside, beware of drowning in them;
for when the drops follow one another, they become torrents.

Lay aside the veil; perhaps the herd of our glances
may graze awhile in the garden of your face.

When you veiled yourself, I thought your face a flame
within the veil, and imagined it a lantern.

My heart was enraptured with stars: wherever
I beheld them, I saw them setting.

My heart was enamored of the one I saw, so whenever
I drew a handspan nearer to him, he drew back a mile.

The days slew me when I had slain them
with knowledge—behold a slayer slain.
