Ah, can what I hope for be attained?

How often I demand it of Time, while he slips away!

    فما ليَ عيشٌ دونَ ذاك يسوغ

    It is nothing but nearness to you, if only I were granted it;

for no life without that is sweet to me.

I spend my hours grieving for you,

as though I bore a sting through all of time.

And I cannot describe my longing for you,

though in all else I am eloquent.

My eyelids overflow at the thought of you, as

bucket mouths overflow in the hands of water-drawers.

And separation's sovereign has shed from my tear ducts

blood in which the lions of longing lap.

My friends, may your affection be spared all change,

lest it turn from love's covenant and stray.

Indeed, every nobleman among you has departed from me—

each is excellence itself—or rather, excellence is fashioned from him.

May God water my days with you, when their span

was brief, yet their pleasures were abundant.
