فأيُّand what a نفيسٍnoble one تَولَّىtook charge of نَفيساsomething noble
A king has won the realm and brought relief to souls;
A king who brought souls relief has gained the kingdom.
what a precious man has taken charge of a precious thing!
And what a noble ruler has taken charge of a noble realm!
فإنْfor if تكُare أفعالُthe deeds آبائهof his forefathers
بُدوراfull moons فقدthen indeed بثَّscattered فيناamong us شموساsuns
And if his forefathers’ deeds were
For if the deeds of his forefathers are
full moons, he has spread suns among us.
full moons, he has indeed scattered suns among us.
هداياهhis gifts أهدتْbestowed لأرواحناupon our souls

His gifts have granted our spirits,
His gifts have bestowed upon our souls
through his kindness, blessings after misery.
through his kindness, blessings after misery.

He revived souls and banished misery,
So he revived souls and banished misery,
emptied prisons and swept away taxes.
and emptied prisons and swept away tolls.

بهthrough it الرِّممُthe decayed remains الساكناتresting in الرُّموساthe graves
Safety spread, until there almost came alive
And safety spread; almost brought to life
through it the crumbling remains that lie in tombs.
by it were the remains resting in graves.

فعادتْso it became رياضاgardens وكانتand it had been يَبيساparched ground
O mercy, made to dwell throughout the land,
So, O mercy made to dwell in the land,
which turned to gardens, though once parched earth!
it became gardens, though it had been parched ground.
ملكتَyou have won القلوبthe hearts فأماand as for عِداكyour enemies
فسعدُكthen your good fortune يُلقِيcasts عليهمupon them نُحوساmisfortunes
You have won the hearts; as for your foes,
You have won hearts; and as for your enemies,
your good fortune hurls calamities upon them.
your good fortune casts misfortunes upon them.
فإنْfor if أَضْمرواthey harbor غدرَthe treachery فرعونَof Pharaoh فيكagainst you
فسيفُكthen your sword مثلlike العصاthe staff عندwith موسىMoses
If they harbor Pharaoh’s treachery against you,
For if they harbor Pharaoh's treachery against you,
your sword is like the staff in Moses’ hand.
your sword is like the staff in Moses' hands.
وحَقِّكand by your honor ياO ثانيَsecond of الأَفْضَلَيْنِthe two al-Afdals (most excellent)
يميناan oath تُرَىis deemed بَرَّةًtruthful لاnot غَموساperjurious
By your honor, O second of the two noblest men,
And by your honor, O second of the two al-Afdals,
I swear an oath you shall find true, never perjured:
I swear an oath deemed truthful, not perjurious:
لقدindeed سُسْتماyou two have governed الملكthe realm فيamong العالمينmankind

وأعجزتماand you two rendered incapable مَلِكاa king أنof يسوساruling
You two have governed the realm among all peoples
you two have indeed governed the realm among mankind,
and rendered any king incapable of ruling.
and left any king unable to rule.

Prepare your army for the two Easts,
Prepare your armies for the two easts,
and the two Wests, that you may range through them.
and for the two wests, so that they may range through them.
فإنكfor you are إسكندرAlexander المُحْدَثينthe people of this age
فهلso is there خَضِرٌKhidr تصطفيهyou choose him جليساa companion
For you are the Alexander of latter-day men—
For you are the Alexander of this age;
but have you a Khidr to choose as your companion?
so is there a Khidr you would choose as a companion?
