As surely as distress has settled upon its enviers.

God raises no honor to the loftiest heights

Without your rank being its heart and head.

Verses of thanks to you pass from mouth to mouth,

As though they were breath to the souls of humankind.

Virtues that, whenever they reach my eyes

And ears, do what the wine-cup does.

They distract the speaker from the talk most fitting for him,

As though they were ropes binding people's minds.

Books cannot contain them; the days are their copyists,

The sea is ink, and the face of the earth is paper.

This, although all the books of excellence together

Are but a booklet on a fraction of your exalted life.

    فمدحُ غيرِك فيما بعدُ وَسْواس

    In every virtue, I have briefly named its masters;

So praise of anyone else henceforth is idle whispering.

And you gave at first and gave again, without delay,

As though your wealth were endowments for petitioners.

A bounty that sells you the foremost kings for what

And a majesty that makes them leap in fear—

Lions whose lairs lie in the hearts of lions.

O garden of Juyushi excellence, whose fruit

Is harvested through al-Murtada as generosity and valor.

A garden whose fragrance carries praise abroad,

So rose, eglantine, and myrtle blush.

The rays of the sun of glory shine within it:

A sun in the light, and a torch in darkness.

A bough through which your lofty, towering branch has risen,

Firm amid terror, swaying in generosity.

You drew him close to you in favor, and he gained

    Beauty, honor, and intimacy thereby.

You clothed him in a robe whose beauties were preserved

For him—what a garment, and what a wearer!

In the sphere of good fortune you joined this full moon of yours

To the sun, where the horizon's stars sit in attendance.

And glory encamped at the wedding whose

Splendors were immense, and there my steeds raced—

Each a rhyme whose wildness yielded

To my mind, though it is skittish with other minds.

I filled them with praise of Shahanshah; within them it is

A pearl enclosed in bags of brocade.

No region on earth remains that it does not perfume,

As though they were saddlecloths for the wind's mounts.

O best of men in speech—your deeds surpass it,

And deeds are the foundations of every word.

May you both endure as long as time, in ease,

And may whoever opposes you both be a target for harm,

Until his sons rule every kingdom,

While you govern them in all that they govern.
