ياO ساحلَshore الثَّغرِthe port كمhow many ليfor me فيكَin you منof أَربِa desire
ومنand of سرورٍjoy ومنand of عَهْدٍan old bond ومنand of طَرَبِrapture
O shore of the port, how many desires I have in you,
And joys, and old bonds, and rapture,
ومنand of حبيبٍa beloved أَرانِيshowed me فيكَin you مَنظرُهhis appearance
رَوْضاa garden منof الْحُسْنِbeauty فيwithin روضٍa garden منof الأدبِrefinement
And many a beloved whose appearance showed me, in you,
A garden of beauty within a garden of refinement,
ومنand of أصيلٍlate afternoon كأنّas though الماءَthe water فيكَin you بهduring it
ذَوْبُmolten اللُّجَينsilver عَلاهُoverlaid it ذائبُmolten الذهبِgold
And many a late afternoon when your waters seemed
Molten silver overlaid with molten gold,
ومنand of حديثٍconversation يَسُرُّdelights النفسَthe soul مَوْقعُهits effect
كأنماas though اشْتُقَّwas drawn منfrom صِرفِpure, unmixed ابْنِةthe daughter of العِنَبthe grape
And many a conversation whose effect delights the soul,
As though drawn from the pure daughter of the grape.
قدindeed كانthere was فيin رَدِّrestoring ماضِيpast العيشِlife فيكin you لناfor us
بعضُsome الرجاءِhope لوَif أنيِّthat I كنتُI had been لمnot أَشِبI turned gray
In restoring our former life in you, we might have had
Some hope—had I not turned gray.
ولوand even if أعادتْreturned ليَto me الأيامُthe days ماwhat أَخذتْthey took
معwith المشيبِgray hair الذيthat أَبقَتْهthey left it behind لمnot يَطِبbe pleasant
And even if the days returned to me what they took,
It would not be sweet with the gray hair they left behind.
فالشيبُfor gray hair أولُthe first موتِdeath المرءِof a man منهof him إذاwhen
بَداit appears بهon him كدَبيبِlike the creeping of النارِfire فيthrough الحَطَبfirewood
For gray hair is the first death within a man, when
It appears upon him, like fire creeping through firewood.
ياO ثغرَport لَهْوِىof my pleasures وثَغراًand a mouth كنتُI used to أَرشفُهI sip it
بُكاىَmy weeping منbecause of كلِّevery ثَغرٍmouth ظلَّkept يلعبُtoying بيwith me
O port of my pleasures, and lips I once sipped,
I weep over every mouth that kept toying with me.
بَعدْتماyou two grew distant ودَناand it drew near منيto me فهلْso is there سببٌa means
يُدنيكماbrings you both near وهْوwhile it is منيto me غيرُnot مُقْترِبapproaching
You two have grown distant, while it has drawn near me—is there a means
To bring you both near, while it keeps away from me?
قدalready كنتُI was أعجِزُI am unable عنto حَمْلِىmy bearing طَليعتَهits vanguard
فكيفso how حاليmy condition بَحْملِin bearing الْجَحْفلِthe vast army اللَّجِبclamorous
I was already unable to bear its vanguard;
How, then, shall I fare bearing the clamorous host?
