Reason bade him desist, secretly and discreetly;
so he would have desisted, were he not immersed in remembrance.

Whenever it crosses his mind, it renews
a grief that blazes between coming and going.

May that time, so long gone, be watered
by the life-giving rain of every downpouring cloud.

O our days in the port city, will you return
to one who keeps faith and has not changed?

And shall I savor your breeze before dawn,
as it shakes hands with dew-drenched, flowering plants,

and strut in the twin robes of youth and longing,
and drag my robe's train with a swaggerer's gait?

And dew's tears linger, bewildered, on the rose's cheek,
like a carnelian goblet beneath scattered pearls.

And the fresh daisies' bloom, when it appears, resembles
a maiden's smile revealing spaced, finely notched teeth.

by a graceful green robe, left unbuttoned.

When the breeze's hands caress their backs,
they mimic every well-proportioned weave of chain mail.

And if the waterwheels groan within them, in answer
the birds trill melodies of finely wrought song.

The swaying boughs are like dancers,
swaying to the beat of a tambourine and lute.

سوىexcept for فُرَجٍgaps تُهْدِىoffer الضِّياءَthe light لمُبْصِرto a beholder
The trees crowd close in the air above them,
save for gaps that offer light to the beholder.

So through them the full moon spreads each dirham-shaped patch of light,
and through them the sun scatters each dinar-shaped one.
