برقٌlightning تَاَلَّقgleamed منfrom نَعْمانَNaʿmān معترضاstretching across
أَهاجَstirred up بينَbetween ضلوعيmy ribs عارِضاa cloud عَرَضاarose
Lightning gleamed from Naʿmān, stretching across,
Stirring within my ribs a cloud that arose.
فظلتso I kept on أشكوI lament هوىlove شوقاًlonging كلَمْحَتِهlike its flash
بينbetween الجوانحِthe ribs حَرَّىburning with longing تشتكيcomplain حَرَضاwasting sickness
So I kept lamenting love, with longing like its flash,
Within burning ribs that lament wasting sickness.
ماnot كنتُI was أولَthe first صَبٍّa lovesick lover ماتdied منfrom جَزعٍanguish
خوفَfor fear of القِلَىrejection فمضتْso passed أيامهhis days ومَضىand he passed away
I was not the first lovesick soul to die of anguish,
For fear of rejection; his days passed, and he passed away.
كمhow many عاشقٍa lover نالَattained ماwhat يرجوhe hopes for بلاwithout تعبٍtoil
وآخرٍand another زادهincreased his suffering جورُcruelty الهوىlove فقَضَىso he died
How many a lover gained what he hoped for without toil,
And another, whose suffering love's cruelty increased, died.
للهِto God (expressing wonder) منthose whom أناI صَبٌّlovesick فيin مَحبَّتهمlove for them
ومنand those whom بهمbecause of them كلُّevery عضوٍlimb يشتكيcomplains of مرضاsickness
How wondrous are those for whom I pine in love,
And those because of whom every limb complains of sickness.
قدindeed كانused to يُغنيهمُsuffice for them قلبيmy heart ويكلؤُهمand guard them
فلمso it did not يجدfind لهمfor them مذsince قوضواthey struck camp عوضاa replacement
My heart once sufficed them and guarded them,
Yet since they struck camp, it has found no replacement for them.
سارواthey journeyed وسارand journeyed فؤاديmy heart نحوtoward سيرهمُtheir course
فكلماso whenever ركضواthey urged on أَجْمالَهمtheir camels رَكَضاit galloped
They journeyed, and my heart journeyed along their path,
So whenever they urged their camels on, it galloped too.
فيat أولِthe head of القومthe company شمسُthe sun of الحسنbeauty يحملهاcarries her
قَدٌّa figure يَميسsways gracefully بمثلِlike الغصنthe branch فانْتَفضاthen it quivered
At the head of the company, beauty's sun is borne
By a figure that sways like a bough, then quivers.
ممشوقةُtall and slender القَدِّof figure خَوْدٌa delicate maiden كلماwhenever طَرحتْshe cast
سهمَthe arrow of الهوىlove وجدتْshe found قلبيmy heart لهfor it غَرَضاa target
A tall, slender-figured, delicate maiden—whenever she looses
Love's arrow, she finds my heart a target for it.
