I see people given over to oppression and backbiting,

and disparagement; no sensible person has discerned the matter.

They have persisted in opposing me, so every one of them

inclines toward anyone who bears mankind enmity.

    وإن عايَنوا شرا فكلٌّ مناضل

    Whenever they see good, they feign blindness and are struck dumb;

and if they witness evil, each one champions it.

No man among them escapes harm,

nor does any of them neglect to disparage him.

If he is devout, they accuse him of religious innovation,

call him a heretic, and say, 'Argumentative!'

    embodying inarticulacy—rather, he is ignorant.'

And if he is wicked, woe to his mother

for what those assembled at gatherings recount about him.

And if he comes from a notable house, they say, 'He merely

boasts of the dead and of those who pass away.'

And if he is unknown, then in their eyes he is

like the eggs of Dumayl—unrecognized and obscure.

And if he speaks, they say, 'His understanding has attained knowledge!'

as though no one before him had ever spoken.

And if he is bold, they say, 'Reckless!'

And if he is cowardly, they say, 'A shirker' [uncertain reading].

And if he is wealthy, they say, 'His wealth

is ill-gotten; he has practiced usury—what vile sustenance!'

And if he is poor, then in their eyes he is

lowly and abject, despised by the base.

And if he acquires money, they say, 'A brute,

to whom fate has brought luck and riches.'

And if he is generous, they say, 'A fool and a spendthrift.'

And if he gives nothing, they say, 'Stingy and miserly.'

And if the poor fellow is content, they say, 'Because of weakness

and the abasement of a soul engulfed by vices.'

    And if he longs for women, they call him a sinner;

and if he is chaste, they say, 'That is guile and falsehood.'

And if he repents, they say, 'He did not repent out of asceticism,

but he is a cunning, accursed deceiver.'

And if he plays chess and backgammon,

and plays with a discerning man, they say, 'He ingratiates himself.'

And if he keeps ties with friends by eating with them,

then he is a freeloader, and an intruder bent on evil.

And if the poor fellow shuns them through his asceticism,

they say, 'Insipid, cold, and sluggish.'

And if he seeks evil, they embolden him to do it,

even if doing so lays vital parts open to attack.

And if he attains eminence, they say, 'It was our toil and our wealth.'

And if he does not, a foe and a deserter meet him.

of one whom death and calamities avoid.'

And if he dies, they say, 'He did not die a natural death,

but from indiscriminately mixing what he ate.'

So nothing now can save him from their talk,

nor can anything later save him from woe.

People are nothing but gloaters and stubborn adversaries,

possessed of envy, from which their hostility plainly shows.

So do not abandon an undertaking for fear of someone's words,

for what you fear and guard against will happen.
