أَعودَ بكَسْبٍ يُريها المُنَى
And I left a beautiful woman behind, so that
I might return with earnings that would let her see her wishes fulfilled.

وعُدْتُ بأَنفَسِ ما يُقْتَنَى
So I stayed away until gray hair overtook me,
And returned with the most precious things one can acquire.

She said, “What made you gray-haired?” I replied,
“Sailing the seas and prolonged toil.”

بلا شكَّ من حيثُ رُمتْ الغِنى
She said, “By my life, I see you have grown poor,
Without doubt, through the very means by which you sought wealth.

Nor could the good of many times what
You earned make up for the slightest harm it has wrought.

And you seek a pauper, say, ‘I am he.’”
