وليلةٍand a night منamong حِسانِthe fairest الدهرِtime بِتُّI spent the night بهاduring it
بساحلِon the shore of الثَّغْرِthe port فيat أعلىthe highest مَناظرِهِits lookouts
And I spent a night among time’s fairest,
One night of delight from the bounties of time we spent
on the port’s shore, at the highest of its lookouts.
On the shore of the frontier, in view of its bounds,
وفيand in المَنارةِthe lighthouse منfrom تلْقائِناopposite us قَبَسa flame
والبدرand the full moon يظهرis visible ثُلْثاهtwo-thirds of it لناظرِهto its beholder
And in the lighthouse opposite us was a flame,
Whence sparks from our fire glowed bright o’er the main,
and two-thirds of the full moon were visible to its beholder,
As the moon showed her horns for our gaze to discern,
كشاربٍlike a drinker قامrose إجلالاout of respect وفيand in يدهhis hand

like a drinker who rose out of respect, holding in his hand
Like a reveller who lifts to enjoy the red wine
two cups for drinking, delighted by his visitor.
His cups, while the stars like his guests shine.
