وغاضبٍand an angry man غالَطdissembled عنabout شَيْبِهِhis gray hair
وغاضبٍ غالَط عن شَيْبِهِ
كأنماas though دُلَّhe was alerted علىto عَيْبِهِhis flaw
كأنما دُلَّ على عَيْبِهِ
And an angry man dissembled about his gray hair,
Angry and faulty, hiding his grey hair
as though he had been alerted to a flaw in himself.
As if he was exposed for his flaw
لوif كانhe had أَبْقاهُleft it علىin حالِهits condition
لو كان أَبْقاهُ على حالِه
ماnot أَلْجَأhe drove الناسpeople إلىto رَيبْهsuspicion of him
ما أَلْجَأ الناس إلى رَيبْه
Had he left it as it was,
Had he let it be in its state
he would not have driven people to suspect him.
People wouldn’t suspect him
قدindeed رامَhe sought أَنْto يَخْفَىbe hidden ومنand from خَلَفِهbehind him
قد رامَ أَنْ يَخْفَى ومن خَلَفِه
أَدِلةٌsigns تُعْرِبspeak عنof غَيْبِهhis secret
أَدِلةٌ تُعْرِب عن غَيْبِه
He sought to hide, yet from behind him
He wanted to conceal it but behind him
come signs that reveal his secret.
Were signs exposing his secret
والشيبُand gray hair كالسيلlike a torrent إذاwhen ماemphatic particle طماit overflows
والشيبُ كالسيل إذا ما طما
لمdid not تَدْرِyou know ماwhat يمنعprevents منfrom شَييْبِهhis graying
لم تَدْرِ ما يمنع من شَييْبِه
And gray hair is like a torrent: when it overflows,
Grey hair is like a torrential flood
you know not what can hold back his graying.
Nothing can stop it from turning grey
