بِتُّI spent the night بهاin it للقَدرَbecause of fate الضَّروريinescapable
بِتُّ بها للقَدرَ الضَّروري
And a chamber counted among the graves—
And a chamber made of a number of graves
I spent the night in it, compelled by inescapable fate,
Where I spend the night out of necessity

On a night of excessive heat,
In a night of extreme heat
Like sheep’s heads in the oven—
Like sheep heads in an oven

بَعوضُها يكسر كالنسور
Sealed shut, plastered with clay, and stoked with fire.
Shut tight, covered, baked
Its mosquitoes swoop like vultures,
Its mosquitoes pierce like eagles

Or like gray goshawks and falcons.
Or like comets, meteors and hawks
They do to faces and backs
They act upon the faces and backs

What the spears of al-Khatt do to throats.
Like spearheads act upon chests
Their sounds in the pitch-black darkness
Their sounds in the stifling darkness

فلم نَزلْ في الوَيْل والثُّبور
Resemble the cry of the waterwheel.
Resemble what roars from waterfalls
So we remained in misery and ruin,
So we did not stop wailing and raving

And in every perilous, dreaded plight,
And every grave and dangerous matter
Until its dawn came to us with light.
Until its morning came with light

فذقتُ طعمَ الموتِ والنُّشور
So I tasted death and resurrection.
Then I tasted the flavor of death and resurrection
