Eyes are tethers for the hearts’ inmost cores.

They bring slackness to the eye of forgetfulness.

They kept my heart from straying from love,

forcibly, and kept reproach from entering my ear.

O you who leave me between the blaze of anguish

searing my ribs, and an eye gushing tears!

Sickness has left nothing of me but

a bone it strips of flesh, without marrow.

If it has pleased you that I am tormented in love,

then indeed I am content that your mind is at ease.

So rejoice: here I am, passion’s rival in abundance,

its ally, its companion, and its brother.

In place of union’s sweet water, I was given stagnant water,

murky, and salt flats in place of faithfulness’s garden.

So it is as though that water were not my watering place—

the clear one—nor that encampment my encampment.

Ah, for those fine days gone by!

If only my cries could help now that they are gone!

Days when I asked the one who shunned me for a gesture of affection,

and he would give to me like a miser affecting generosity.

So I shall surely compose poems out of love for them,

    that surpass al-ʿAjjāj and al-Shammākh.

Ask me: I shall tell you of love through my own account

of what befell me, not on my teachers’ authority.

By God, were I to dictate some of my wondrous experiences

in love, I would prolong the copyists’ toil.
