O our beloved ones at the port, I—though borne far

from you by my dwelling—have never forsaken the pledge.

And the reproachers have blamed me for loving you, time and again,

yet they have not turned me from love with their reproaches.

If they lay bare the sincerity of every affection,

then people's love is but a part of what I hold.

You have a dwelling in my heart that is never far away,

even if I were beyond Iraq or India.

    وإنْ أَكثَروا بُعْد قَرُبتم على البُعْد

    They have indeed sent me far from you, yet you have drawn near;

and though they increased the distance, you grew near despite the distance.

So, by God, I have never sided with anyone who blamed me for loving you,

and I surely hide from you more than I reveal.

And even if I sought to forget you, I would be reminded of you

by your beautiful deeds, like a neatly strung necklace.

I would then be bereft of noble pride and chivalry,

if I did not repay them with what I owe them.

And I ask the winds for the gift of your breeze,

and inhale from them a scent like that of newly opening roses.
