O songstress of the Two Palaces, from Marj Ḥannah—
O songbird of al-Qasrayn, from Marj Hanna,
weeping from the tamarisks amid a flock of mourning doves—
From the tamarisks you weep among mourning doves.
تُرَىI wonder بكِin you مابيwhat is in me منbecause of حبيبٍa beloved فَقَدْتُهI lost him
تُرَى بكِ مابي من حبيبٍ فَقَدْتُه
أَبانَتْهparted him عنيfrom me ناجياتُswift mounts of الجَوائحcalamities
أَبانَتْه عني ناجياتُ الجَوائح
do you, I wonder, suffer what I suffer for a beloved I have lost,
I wonder, do you share my grief for a beloved I have lost,
whom she-camels spared by calamities bore away from me?
Whom the swift mounts of calamity parted from me?

Whenever my soul remembers that beloved, my tears pour forth
Whenever my soul remembers my beloved, my tears overflow
over searing sighs that rise.
Over the rising, scorching sighs.

How many a night I held her close, while our bed was
And many a night I embraced her, while our bedding
sand cushions among the vineyards of al-Masāliḥ,
Was cushions of sand in the vineyards of al-Masalih;

And the coolness of dew enfolded us, and its breeze
fondling us as a contented, forgiving one might.
Caressed us as one contented and indulgent would;

And the east wind trailed the hem of its mantle,
dew-damp over the carpets of fragrant gardens.
Dew-moistened, over the carpets of fragrance-wafting gardens.
