ياO مَنْyou who صَفاare sincere ليtoward me ظاهِراoutwardly ونِيَّهْand in intention
يا مَنْ صَفا لي ظاهِرا ونِيَّهْ
ومَنْand you whose يديmy hand بِوُدِّهthrough his affection غَنِيَّةْrich
ومَنْ يدي بِوُدِّه غَنِيَّةْ
O you who are sincere toward me, outwardly and in intent,
O you whose intentions and affection are pure
and you through whose affection my hand is rich,
And whose love enriches me
وَقَتْكmay it shield you نفسيmy soul وافدَthe arriving messenger of المَنِيَّةdeath
وَقَتْك نفسي وافدَ المَنِيَّة
هَلُمَّcome عنديI have تحفةٌa gift سَنِيةsplendid
هَلُمَّ عندي تحفةٌ سَنِية
may my soul shield you from death's messenger.
Though death takes my soul
Come: I have a splendid gift,
Come, I have an aged gift for you
وأكلةٌand a morsel طيبةtasty هَنِيّةdelightful
وأكلةٌ طيبة هَنِيّة
بنتُa daughter of نخيلٍpalm trees حلوةٌsweet جَنِيّةfreshly picked
بنتُ نخيلٍ حلوةٌ جَنِيّة
and a tasty, delightful morsel:
And a delicious, sweet meal
a sweet, freshly plucked daughter of the palms,
The fruit of sweet, ripe palms
أحلَىsweeter منthan الفرصةِthe opportunity بالأُمنيَّةfor one's wish
أحلَى من الفرصةِ بالأُمنيَّة
بالغhas reached the utmost فيهاin her النُّضجُripeness وهْيand she is نِيَّةraw
بالغ فيها النُّضجُ وهْي نِيَّة
sweeter than the chance to fulfill a wish.
Sweeter than hopes and wishes
Ripeness has reached perfection in her, though she is raw.
Ripe to perfection though young
لاdoes not تُتِعبstrain الضرسthe molar ولاnor الثَّنِيَّةthe incisor
لا تُتِعب الضرس ولا الثَّنِيَّة
كأنهاas though she تُشْتَفُّis sipped فيin الصِّينيةthe platter
كأنها تُشْتَفُّ في الصِّينية
She strains neither molar nor incisor,
It won’t bother the molars or incisors
as though she were sipped from the platter:
As if it melts away in the bowl
ياfirst part of 'ruby' (split word) قوتةremaining part of 'ruby' (split word) حمراءred معدنيةmineral
يا قوتة حمراء معدنية
فيin طمعهاher desire (as written) وزيهاand her attire مكّيةMeccan
في طمعها وزيها مكّية
a red ruby from the mine,
O you red, precious delicacy
Meccan in her desire and her attire.
With a Mekkan allure and temptation
كأنماas though البرنيةthe Barni date البرنيةthe burniyya jar
كأنما البرنية البرنية
فهْيfor she is لهاto it شَبيهةsimilar كَنِيَّةa namesake
فهْي لها شَبيهة كَنِيَّة
As though the Barni date were the burniyya jar,
As if a date, a date
for she resembles it and shares its name.
So very much alike
