May the western quarter send its breeze

From the port, with the fragrance through which I once knew

A rapture from the heights of al-Zahiriyya,

Which a lofty, many-hued garden brings forth.

So let it tell whether the traces of my revelry are as before

There, when the days gave freely and dealt fairly.

So I gained nothing in exchange for those hills but grief

For them, while the eye's tears break forth and flow.

And my dwelling in Fustat is an honor; yet

My heart's abode there is loftier and nobler.

There I lived the life of youth, casting off

My bridle, and paid no heed to a harshly rebuking censor.

And family, friends, cheer, and gladness,

And safety, a loved one, standing, and a helper.

I stayed away from those abodes out of necessity,

And remaining apart from them is against my will.
