تَشَبَّهتَyou likened yourself بِالأَعرابِto the Bedouin أَهلِpeople of التَعَجرُفِarrogance
تَشَبَّهتَ بِالأَعرابِ أَهلِ التَعَجرُفِ
فَدَلَّso it pointed عَلىto فَحواكَyour underlying meaning قُبحُthe ugliness of التَكَلُّفِaffectation
فَدَلَّ عَلى فَحواكَ قُبحُ التَكَلُّفِ
You imitated the Bedouin, those people of arrogance;
You imitated the uncouth Bedouins
so your ugly affectation revealed the import of your words.
Thus exposing your ugly pretentiousness
لِسانٌa tongue نُباطِيُّNabataean البَيانِexpression عَرَفتُهُI recognized it
لِسانٌ نُباطِيُّ البَيانِ عَرَفتُهُ
إِلىtoward جِهَةِthe direction of الأَعرابِthe Bedouin لَمnot يَتَصَرَّفِit turned
إِلى جِهَةِ الأَعرابِ لَم يَتَصَرَّفِ
A tongue Nabataean in expression—I recognized it—
An eloquent Nabataean tongue I recognized
had never turned toward the Bedouin.
That did not incline towards the Bedouins
وَشَيخُكَand your elder شَيخٌan old man صالِحٌvirtuous غَيرَexcept أَنَّهُthat he
وَشَيخُكَ شَيخٌ صالِحٌ غَيرَ أَنَّهُ
مَليءٌadept بِتَحبيرِat embellishing الرِداءِthe cloak المُفَوَّفِstriped
مَليءٌ بِتَحبيرِ الرِداءِ المُفَوَّفِ
And your elder is a virtuous old man, except that he
And your sheikh, though devout
is adept at embellishing the striped cloak.
Is obsessed with dyeing his oversized robe
لَئِنif indeed كُنتَyou are لِلأَشعارِof poems وَالنَحوِand grammar حافِظاًa memorizer
لَئِن كُنتَ لِلأَشعارِ وَالنَحوِ حافِظاً
لَقَدcertainly كانَhe was مِنamong حُفّاظِthe memorizers of سورَةِthe surah of يوسُفِJoseph
لَقَد كانَ مِن حُفّاظِ سورَةِ يوسُفِ
If indeed you are a memorizer of poems and grammar,
Even if you have memorized poetry and grammar
he certainly was among the memorizers of the Surah of Joseph.
He had memorized the chapter of Joseph
