لَم أَجِد في الناسِ حُرّا

I tasted people, pure and simple

I found no noble person among them.

صارَ أَحلى الناسِ في العَي

نِ إِذا ما ذيقَ مُرّا

The sweetest of people to the eye became

In my eyes, those grew ever dearer

bitter when tasted.
