لَم أَجِد في الناسِ حُرّا

I found no noble man among the people.

I did not find anyone free among people

صارَ أَحلى الناسِ في العَي

صارَ أَحلى الناسِ في العَي

نِ إِذا ما ذيقَ مُرّا

نِ إِذا ما ذيقَ مُرّا

The sweetest of people to the eye became

The sweetest of people in my eyes

bitter when tasted.
